Fun Things to do in Your Backyard in Winter

by Garden Winds

It’s chilly and cold outside, and you can’t stand another minute of being cooped up inside the house, so why not head out for some winter fun in your backyard. Sure, the weather is not ideal, but getting outside for a little bit to breathe in some outdoor air is good for you and is bound to put a few hairs on your chest. Here are a few fun ideas and things you can do with your family in your very own backyard to get your blood flowing. Just make sure you bundle up before digging into any of these activities!

Bonfire

A great way to get family and friends together outside is with a good old-fashioned gathering around a bonfire. Fire pits are fairly inexpensive to purchase at any local hardware retail chain store. Grab some wood and a match and enjoy an evening with your loved ones as a small fire is glowing in the dark.

Brush up on Photography Skills

The winter season lays out beautiful scenery that needs to be captured by camera or smartphone. You don’t have to be a professional to take photos of still life. Smartphones have a lot of filters and editing options that allow you to take that perfect image of freshly fallen snow amongst bare trees or a photo of your family playing in the snow. Go on a walk around your neighborhood or regional park and snap a few photos that illustrate the winter season in your area. Develop the images and create a collage and/or frame what you’ve captured for instant wall art

Go Stargazing

Spend an evening looking up at the night sky and wish upon a star. Get comfy and cozy with lots of blankets and all the winter essentials to stay warm outside. Grab a cup of hot apple cider and relax as you gaze at the stars shining up above. If you are truly into astronomy, grab a telescope and take a closer look; see if you can identify a planet or a constellation. It’s a pretty amazing sight to see.

Play a Game of Freeze Tag

Get some exercise and grab your coat and the kids (with their coats, too) and play a game of freeze tag in the backyard. The cold, chilly air won’t faze you if you’re running around trying to tag one another playing this classic game. It will be a nice way to take in some fresh air to get outside for a little bit before heading back indoors.

Have Game Night Outside

Take your board game nights onto the deck for an afternoon or early evening of good and clean fun. To stay warm, get a fire going or set up an outdoor heater and bring lots of blankets. Serve up hot chocolate and other party snacks as you play a game of Monopoly, Life, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble or Cards of Humanity. Bring your competitive spirit while enjoying the fresh winter air.

Of course, staying indoors is just as nice, but if you do have a winter, as in snow, we suggest that you take advantage of the wondrous winter season that comes but once a year. From Garden Winds to you and yours, have a wonderful and joyous holiday season with best wishes and blessings for a happy new year!
